When we increased cheap carbohydrates in place of quality proteins, and fats became nothing but the inexpensive/rancid flavouring sprayed onto kibble, companies compromised our dog's health in exchange for a quick buck.
They followed the low-fat trend we saw in mainstream human diets and not many eyelids were bat.
A healthy balance of fats in our dog's diets is crucial for:
- Healthy cell membranes. These are the foundations of a healthy animal.
- Brain function.
- Too much fat can rob the diet of the important nutrients they get from protein.
- Energy. Fat contains twice the amount of energy as protein, so too much can cause unwanted weight gain.
How to balance fats:
Current farming practices throw fat content in muscle meat out of whack compared to what would naturally occur in wild prey.
Grain-fed ruminants are higher in saturated fats, lower in Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, lower in Alpha Linoleic Acid and has an inflammatory omega 6 to 3 ratio.
Commercial feed leaves poultry with an incorrect omega 3:6 ratio, is high in polyunsaturated fats and arachidonic acid.
To balance fats, try to rotate proteins when possible and add 28g of fish (sardines and salmon are best) per 1/2 kg muscle meat fed.
Our goal is always no more than 10% fat as fed for adult dogs.
